FORT WAYNE, In (Indiana's NewsCenter)- We now know the name of the Fort Wayne police officer who shot and killed a man who wounded a U.S. Marshal.
Officer Derrick Demorest is a nine-year veteran of the Fort Wayne Police Department, and was guarding the outside of the Eden Green apartment building where 26-year-old Marcus A. Hayden of Fort Wayne shot the U.S. Marshal in the leg while he was trying to arrest him.
Police say Hayden jumped out the window after shooting the federal agent.
Demorest was waiting and police say when Hayden refused to put down his gun, Demorest then shot him.
He's on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
That's standard for a situation like this.
The suspect from Monday night's police action shooting has been identified by the Allen County Coroner’s Officer as being 26-year-old Marcus A. Hayden of Fort Wayne.
Hayden was shot by police after reportedly shooting a U.S. Marshal who was attempting to serve a warrant with Fort Wayne police officers Monday night.
According to Police Chief Rusty York, FWPD officers joined two federal marshals as they served a federal warrant in the 1300 block of Greene Street. When law enforcement attempted to serve the warrant, the suspect opened fire on the officers. A federal marshal was shot in the leg. Officers then opened fire on the suspect exchanging a "barrage" of gunfire according to Chief York. The suspect was struck, possibly multiple times, and taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The federal marshal was taken to a local hospital in serious condition but Chief York said the agent will be "ok."
When talking about the call going out over scanners of "officer down" Chief York says "That's never a call we want to hear. Fortunately, the Federal officer, it sounds like he's going to be ok."
It's not clear at this time what the warrant/s were for, who the suspect is and how many gunshots were exchanged. Fortunately, no one else was injured when the gunfire was exchanged.
Chief York says multiple, local and federal, will be involved in the investigation moving forward.
