Warsaw, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – A Warsaw middle school teacher was formally charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a former student Thursday morning.
The charges could cost him his teaching position, and his job as a basketball coach.
An unidentified 14-year-old girl, referred to in a court document as "A.V.", came forward and told police about encounters she claims occurred at 26-year old Tyler Baatz’ apartment and in a Warsaw classroom.
Baatz, also the basketball coach at Edgewood Middle School in Warsaw, is charged with one count of sexual misconduct with a minor.
The 14-year old told a Warsaw detective that Baatz was her teacher last year, and that starting last spring they began exchanging texts, which included statements of love and sexual connotations.
The girl says as she attended summer school classes, the two on several occasions hugged and kissed inside a classroom.
Then between August 1st and August 18th, she says Baatz took her back to his apartment, and that Baatz fondled her.
Police say Baatz admitted to the sexual misconduct allegations.
The Warsaw Schools Superintendent says the district is vigilant in trying to protect its student body.
"Unfortunately, due to this incident, we hit a bump in the road and that bump in the road came to light early last evening. We've taken swift and decisive action as an organization today," said Dr. Craig Hintz.
Baatz is suspended with pay.
State law requires he be paid at least until the court case gets resolved.
Dr. Hintz says a letter is going out to the parents of all students at the middle school.
Bond was set at $20,000 for Baatz, who is starting his fourth year of teaching at Edgewood Middle School.
