FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) -- The civil rights fight continues. On this anniversary of the assassination of Doctor Martin Luther King Junior, the Fort Wayne-Allen County branch of the NAACP joins the national 'We Are One' campaign to continue to fight ongoing attacks on civil rights.
It is a grass roots campaign to unite Americans in maintaining gains in civil rights in the United States.
Paulette Nellems, Fort Wayne NAACP President, says, “Well, I'll tell you, if we don't begin to get involved in the educational process, if we do not begin to get involved in the economic process, this can set us back twenty years. So, it is relevant, it is just as relevant as it was in the '60s as it is now. And so it is important that we take a stand and that we show the country that we are concerned about workers rights, about education, about economic development.”
As part of the event today, NAACP officials also honored Jonathan Ray and Jamie Garwood for their work for civil rights and social change.
