Allen County, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - The threat of contracting the West Nile Virus is now very real as Allen County confirms its first human case Wednesday afternoon.
Indiana Health Department officials have investigated 10 human cases of West Nile virus statewide. Allen County joins Fulton, Hamilton, Hancock, Jackson, Monroe, Marion, Tippecanoe and Vanderburgh counties with active human cases.
Mosquitoes thrive in standing water and the drought kept them at bay, for awhile.
But the recent rain and warm temperatures brought them back out in droves!
Basic tips on what you can do to protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes: wear bug spray and empty all containers of standing water located on your property.
Due to the positive test for West Nile in the Woodburn area, the city will be spraying on Monday, August 27 at 7 p.m. Officials request that residents keep small children and pets inside as well as keeping their windows closed at the time of the scheduled spraying.
