FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - 21Alive's Dean Pantazi was honored Friday night for his contributions to local baseball.
The Northeast Indiana Baseball Association presented Dean the 2013 Bob Parker Memorial Award at the organization's hall of fame dinner.
A lifelong Chicago Cubs fan who grew up five miles west of Wrigley Field, Dean has covered baseball among a variety of other sports for 21Alive since 1974.
"It's been a treat to see guys like Eric Wedge, Ben Van Ryn, Brent Gaff, Matt Kinzer, Brian Reith, Mike Roesler, Rob Bowen, Dave Doster and most recently Jarrod Parker--guys I saw and put mics in front of--reach the big time," Dean says of many former area prep athletes. "It's still fun to get out and see the local baseball and softball games around here."
Dean shared stories of local amateur baseball legend Red Kerrington, the late coach Chris Stavreti and his home run off Buzz Capra during a practice at Lane Tech High School in Chicago.
Longtime coach Ray Miller, who died in 2007, and local baseball historian Don Graham were also honored as the NEIBA Hall of Fame class of 2013.
