Story Updated: Jun 27, 2013
WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- A victory for a Whitley County nurse who was determined that no other woman experienced the traumatic diagnosis of breast cancer.
Starting Monday, a new state law takes effect. Health care providers must cover certain services for women with dense breast tissue and the law will require the medical licensing board to adopt rules establishing an education program and standards for annual screening for women with high breast density.
Carrie Barcus, who works for Parkview Whitely says it was two years before her cancer was detected. Barcus worked with Indiana Senate president pro tem David Long to help craft the new law. Long's sister, a breast cancer survivor, has the same condition.
