FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Temperatures continue to drop, which means thermostats are on the rise. Almost half (44%) of your energy bill goes to heating your home. There a lot of things you can do to decrease the amount of energy your home uses and save you money in the process.
-Drop your thermostat to 68: Each degree lower on your thermostat can save you 3% on your energy consumption.
-Insulate: Make sure you have insulation in your attic that covers the ceiling joists. This should be rated between R30 and R38.
-Seal windows and doors: Caulk and seal around windows and doors. This will prevent any cool air from seeping into your home.
-Close the curtains: Keep curtains closed, especially at night. They can prevent cool drafts around windows. During the day, sunshine can help warm your home slightly.
