ANGOLA, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Oh what a difference a year can make. Since we last visited Angola life has certainly gotten better here. Right now Angola is finishing up a huge downtown beautification project that affects both pedestrian and motor traffic around the town circle. New traffic barriers have been built and beautifully decked out with annual and perennial plantings. The barriers do two things; beautify the busiest spot in town and better direct traffic both around the traffic circle and into newly created parking areas. New brick sidewalks have also been added along with café’ style tables and chairs in front of local eateries.
“So people can come down and relax and sit and shoot the breeze,” says Mayor Dick Hickman, “eat their coffee or they can get sandwiches at our restaurants down here and go sit out and enjoy it.”
And this year especially Angola is enjoying the quality that trine university brings to life around here. Trine has built new student housing, added a new football field and will soon be helping Angola and other towns stimulate economic development with new programs for entrepreneurs and research and development for local businesses. and of course there are the students…nearly 2000 of whom call Angola home.
“They come and add to the economy of our community,” says Mayor Hickman, “whether it’s spending money or working in our community. The teachers, the professors that are over there add an awful lot to the community.”
Also new this year, trine has bought an empty church and turned it into the Furth Performing Arts Center, a focus for future cultural events open to students and local citizens as well…adding to a quality of life in Angola that is already sky high.
