FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Chest-high water.

That's what homeowners along Fernwood Avenue and Dalevue Drive woke up to Thursday morning in the Waynedale section of Fort Wayne.

City officials said the rising water in the neighborhood came from the Fairfield Ditch.

By 5 a.m., water was into some homes in the 6500 block of Fernwood, and water in the street was chest deep.

One elderly woman had to be helped out of her house by the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

Meanwhile, crews cut power to 10 homes in the neighborhood for obvious safety reasons.

By 8 a.m., people in homes up the street were removing belongings so they would not be destroyed by the flood waters.

Waynedale Resident Kelli Johnson told Indiana's NewsCenter fighting the rising tide was futile.

"Sandbags don't do no good here. It just comes back up underneath," said Fernwood Avenue Resident Kelli Johnson.

"No, we had no idea, man. They been keeping up with it so far but, it won't be long, don't look like. Two houses down it's in the house, so," said Fernwood Avenue Resident Jeff Flennery.

Families braved the muddy water as they headed for work or school this morning.

Indiana's NewsCenter witnessed some residents so eager to get out of the neighborhood, they plowed their way through their neighbors front yards.

Meanwhile, most neighbors took it in stride, saying friends and neighbors would pitch in to do whatever needed to be done.

City pumps are running to try to stem the tide and prevent further damage.
