FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- There's only a week left in March, and this should easily be the warmest March on record. As of March 22, the average temperature is 52.5°, which is 15.9° above normal. The next hottest March on record is 48.1° in 1946. So far this month, we've broken more than 20 records. Here's a list of most of them:
March 1: High temperature of 66° ties the old record of 66° set in 1976.
March 14: High temperature of 79° beat the old record of 78° set in 1995.
March 15: High temperature of 81° beat the old record of 75° set in 1977 & 1995. This is the earliest we've ever hit 81° in Fort Wayne.
March 16: High temperature of 78° beat the old record of 77° set in 1945.
March 17: High temperature of 76° beat the old record of 71° set in 1945, 1966, 2003, and 2009.
March 18: High temperature of 77° beat the old record of 75° set in 1903.
March 19: High temperature of 83° beat the old record of 76° set in 1921. This is the earliest we've ever hit 83° in Fort Wayne.
March 20: High temperature of 84° beat the old record of 76° set in 1918. This is the earliest we've ever hit 84° in Fort Wayne.
March 21: High temperature of 87° beat the old record of 81° set in 1907. This is the hottest temperature ever recorded in March. It beat the old record of 86° from March 24, 1910!
March 22: High temperature of 83° ties the old record of 83° set in 1907.
This string of record high temperatures for 9 consecutive days beats the previous longest streak of consecutive record high temperatures, which lasted 7 days from July 8-14, 1936.
As of March 23rd, we've seen 10 days in a row of temperatures hitting at least 70°. This puts March 2012 tied for first place with 1907 for most 70°+ days in a row. 1910 is the only year with more days in a row with 10.
Five days have hit at least 80° or hotter this March. This beates the previous record for most 80°+ days during the month. That record was 4 days in March of 1910.
And one more record: March 2012 has already seen 177 growing degree days, which is the all time record for March. The previous record was 126.
