FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- A representative from the Department of Agriculture visited the Fort Wayne G.M. assembly plant this morning to announce an incentive program to reduce dependency on foreign oil.
Grants and loans are available to gas station owners to add ethanol -- and what's being called flex fuel -- pumps.
In five northeast Indiana counties, only 16 stations offer the alternative fuel called E-85.
Flex fuel pumps offer customers a chance to blend gasoline and ethanol in their tanks, which can preserve the good mileage from gasoline, and the cheaper E-85.
Judith Canales/USDA: "There is an opportunity here for them to be able to expand their options and provide for alternative fuels, renewable fuel, E-85, to consumers here in this country."
The one gas station in Indiana that has a flex fuel pump is in Portland, in Jay County.
71% of the vehicles made at the Fort Wayne G.M. plant are flex fuel trucks.
