(Fort Wayne, IN) -- There's been an influx of patients to local emergency rooms, seeking relief for two types of illnesses.
Doctors say respiratory infections, and gastro-intestinal symptoms, like vomiting, diarrhea, achy-ness and fevers are prevalent.
These illnesses are hitting kids and adults alike, so how do you know when it's okay to go back to work, or send your child back to school?
Dr. Jon Winther\Parkview North ER Physician: " Any illness when you've got a fever, you should not go back to work or school if you've got a fever. A lot of schools will send kids back home just because you're not feeling well and you're still probably infectious in the risk of spreading it to others. With strep - tonsilitis, usually we like to have you on antibiotics for 48 hours before you go back to school, so you're less infectious to others."
You can treat most symptoms at home with lots of rest and plenty of fluids.
But he says you should see a physician if you feel dehydrated or your fever hasn't broken after several days.
