FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.nbc33.com) – Not only is this week “Work Zone Awareness Week” in Indiana, but it also marks the beginning of road construction season. And the Indiana Department of Transportation has some big plans for 2013.
While INDOT has already started a number of these projects, some of their biggest have yet to commence.
If you have been on the southwest side of town recently, you may have noticed orange cones on Illinois Road between Scott Road and West Hamilton. That area is being expanded to four lanes with a common, constant middle turn lane.
INDOT also expects to wrap up construction on the I-69 exit at Union Chapel Road, just north of the Parkview Regional Medical Center.
But likely their biggest project this summer will be the resurfacing of Coliseum Boulevard, a seven mile stretch that INDOT will be doing in three phases.
"Initially work will be done on Lima Road between Washington Center Road and State Road 930,” says Mary Foster with the Indiana Department of Transportation. “There will be milling and then asphalt - laying down new asphalt. And then from there we'll do I-69 to Parnell, and then the third phase will be Crescent to Reynolds Street."
Along with that project, INDOT is planning to expand lanes between Parnell and Crescent Avenue during the 2014 construction season.
By notifying drivers in advance of the upcoming projects, INDOT hopes drivers can find safer ways to travel these areas. In coherence with “Work Zone Awareness Week,” INDOT asks all drivers to put down any and all distractions while behind the wheel.
