FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) – Monday marks the beginning of construction on Habitat for Humanity’s model home to their new housing addition Fuller’s Landing in northwest Fort Wayne.
The neighborhood will feature roughly 120 homes specifically built for Habitat families who qualify. The goal of Fuller’s Landing is to offer affordable housing through a zero-interest mortgage program, making monthly payments around $500 a month.
Despite the fact that none of the houses have been built so far, Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity CEO Jason Berger says the outpouring of applications and support has been phenomenal.
"There have been over 270 applicants since our groundbreaking about four and a half weeks ago, so the outpour of interest in overwhelming. We are very excited and humbled that there's that many people that want to live and own their own home."
Berger described the model home being raised is a way for both community members... as well as the potential home-owners... to catch a glimpse... into what is in store.
"it's going to serve as an opportunity for potential homeowners to come out and see what habitat builds and say, 'hey maybe Fuller’s Landing is right for me.'”
But that’s not the only purpose the model home will serve.
“It's also going to serve as a classroom for families that are in the program. Families are going to come out here and we're going to teach them how to maintain their home within our model. They are going to be able to learn how to mow their grass, landscape the yard, how to fix dry wall, how to repaint a room. So it's really going to be nice for them as a teaching tool in our education process that every family goes through."
The homes in Fuller’s Landing will range from 1,200 to 1,800 square feet. Homes will either be one, one-and-a-half, or two-stories and each will feature a two car garage and a sizable front porch.
