FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) - It's the latest social media craze that seems impossible to escape. On Wednesday morning, even Mayor Tom Henry got involved in the "Ice Bucket Challenge" to benefit ALS.

Mayor Henry spent part of his morning at Haley Elementary School with students and teachers who watched with enjoyment as their principal and other school staff members were doused with cold water.

While it seemed like the day's festivities was all fun and games, Haley's principal Brandon White took time to remind students the real reason behind the challenge.

"We definitely had conversations about philanthropy, what that meant to give to others," explains White. "They've seen a lot of the ice bucket challenges, but just so that they had a clear understanding of why people were going around dumping buckets of ice on their head. That it was for a good cause, and what that cause was for."

With any ALS Ice Bucket Challenge comes a challenge, and Mayor Henry issued a few challenges of his own.

"I'm going to go after Jim Anderson, the head of the (Fort Wayne Children's) Zoo," says Mayor Henry. "And since I represented city government I think County Commissioner Nelson Peters, I'd like to challenge him. And how about my newly appointed police chief Garry Hamilton. This is a way to induct him to the full government arena is to have him participate as well."

Based on the rules of the challenge, the three men challenged by Mayor Henry have 24 hours to complete the challenge and donate to the ALS Foundation.
