FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.nbc33.com) – Theme nights have become somewhat of a tradition at Parkview Field and Thursday night was no exception. The team kicked off their highly talked about “Social Media Night” wearing jerseys designed specifically for the occasion.
This is the second time the TinCaps have celebrated "Social Media Night.” Last year the team wore all-green uniforms with their Twitter handle @TinCaps across the chest.
This year however they decided to turn it up a notch.
In fact, the concept has been so popular it was even featured by ESPN writer Darren Rovell.
"After Darren Rovell tweeted it out, then ESPN the next day got a hold of it and sent it out to their million or so followers,” explains Abby Naas, Assistant Marketing Director for the TinCaps. “So it's definitely been a great thing that people have been looking at.”
While the concept of incorporating Twitter followers into a jersey is nothing new, the TinCaps were able to put their own unique twist into it.
“People have featured some of their followers in just the numbers, but we actually created it so that from far away it looks like a green jersey but up close it's actually 6,000 of our Twitter followers."
Based on the team's Twitter feed, it is safe to say it has been a major success. So much so the fans have been asking for a piece of the action. And the team plans to give it to them through – you guessed it – social media.
Fans were asked to use social media apps like FourSquare where you can “check-in” to the game, or post Twitter pictures or Vine videos of them at the game. Once the game was completed the team selected 33 of the most creative fan photos and awarded each a game jersey.
The TinCaps even made it possible for fans to find their Twitter handles on the jerseys. Team representatives drew up a mock jersey and posted it by the front gates. There, fans could search for where their name was on the team’s jersey.
In all, Naas says it was just a way for the team to give back to all their fans.
Oh, and the TinCaps did pull out a 4-1 victory over the Lake County Captains.
