NEW YORK (NBC33) - Longtime NBC News personality Tom Brokaw has been diagnosed with cancer, the network announced Tuesday.

NBC News released a statement saying the former anchor of NBC Nightly News has multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood cells and bone marrow. The prognosis is "encouraged," the network says, for Brokaw, who was diagnosed with cancer in August.

"I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come," Brokaw, 74, said in the NBC News statement. "I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter."

Brokaw came to NBC News in 1966, and sat in the Nightly News anchor chair from 1982 to 2004. He now serves as NBC News Special Correspondent.
