FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.nbc33.com) – Mayor Tom Henry announced today the statue of General Anthony Wayne is on the move.

The mayor's plan calls for the statue to be moved from its current location in Freimann Square to the corner of Main and Clinton. That intersection makes up the northeast corner of Courthouse Green.

The statue has been in its current location since 1973, but trees and foliage in the park have grown enough that a clear view of the statue has become blocked. That is a big reason why Mayor Henry feels this project is so crucial to downtown.

"The whole reason that I want to put him there in the Courthouse Green is to give him the type of recognition that he should have as a historical figure in the city of Fort Wayne. I mean, the city is named after him, so he should have a prominent place in our community."

The move will likely cost just under $75,000 using funds already secured by the Parks and Recreation Department

The plan to have the statue moved will go before the Board of Park Commissioners for approval at their next meeting, August 15th.

Assuming the proposal is approved by the Board of Park Commissioners, construction will begin at the corner of Clinton and Main to build a new foundation for the statue to stand on. That is expected to begin within the next 4-6 weeks. The project is expected to be completed by the end of September.
