FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.nbc33.com) – As temperatures continue to rise we are reminded that road construction season in Indiana has officially begun, and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has plenty of projects in the works. Many of which could take a toll on daily commutes.
While INDOT says most of their projects and contracts are already underway, there is still plenty to be done around northeastern Indiana.
Major projects include the re-paving of a roughly seven mile stretch on Coliseum Boulevard as well as the completion of the Union Chapel interchange at I-69. The good news is, for the most part, the construction on Coliseum will only affect night-time drivers while Union Chapel will cut I-69 down to one lane in each direction.
Other projects affecting the interstate include the bridge at Covington Road, re-surfacing of various points along I-469, and lane closures near Angola between US-20 and Pokagon State Park.
"There's a lot of construction going on,” points out Mary Foster with INDOT, “as you know, it's construction season. We've had a lot of contracts that have started, there's ongoing maintenance but people in the area have probably seen some of the construction we've got."
And Indiana is not alone, as Ohio has announced some of their big summer plans as well. Kirk Slusher with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) pointed to a few big-time projects in northwestern Ohio as well. Work on I-475 outside Toledo continues as well as I-75 through both Lima and Dayton.
Due to the higher volume of construction projects both INDOT as well as ODOT warn drivers of the dangers of driving through construction zones. They are asking drivers to put down the distractions while driving, especially through work zones.
On Tuesday morning INDOT held a presentation at Glenwood Park Elementary School to a crowd of anxious 2nd graders on the importance of work zone safety. Foster says the goal is to start Indiana’s future drivers on the right path early.
