UNITED STATES (www.nbc33.com) -- It's prom season and for the girls, it's all about the dress. High end labels sell for hundreds of dollars, which is a ton of money for most high school kids and their parents.
That is why they're always looking for the best deal. But now brazen scammers are cashing in on their excitement.
Some websites offer designer prom gowns at deep discounts and the websites sure look real but designers say it’s all a scam.
One dress shop owner says she’s faced with girls who have been scammed by online websites at least three to four times a week.
A teenager who worked for months to save the money to buy a Sherri Hill dress was elated when she found the $400 dress online for 25-percent off.
What she got in the mail, a week before prom, was a cheap knockoff shipped from China. It was the wrong color, wrong fabrics, had sloppy stitching and the teen said the dress felt cheap and felt like she looked cheap in it. Instead of the beading that was advertised in the photo, she received a bag of beads and a sewing kit.
Scam artists are shipping imposter prom gowns to girls across the country. Dusty Hill, son of the real Sherri Hill and president of the company, is trying to intercept the knock-offs. He says it’s a huge problem, so huge that the company has hired two full-time investigators to hunt down the counterfeit sites.
Hill says it will be an ongoing fight. The federal government has shut down hundreds of these sites but the scammers are tough to catch with many of them based overseas.
