LAGRANGE, Ind. (www.nbc33.com) – Around 11:30 Thursday morning two suspects of a gas station robbery were arrested by the Lagrange County Police after turning themselves in. The two are believed to be responsible for running off with a donation canister on Sunday belonging to the Muscular Distrophy Association at a Marathon gas station in South Milford.
27 year-old Garrison Beitz of Waterloo and 42 year-old Monica Babin of Kendallville were both charged with D-felony theft. Sheriff Terry Martin says one of the key factors in solving this case was the high-quality surveillance video which clearly depicted the duo grab the canister then walk out. Martin says it was that video that helped break the case open once it was posted it to the office’s Facebook page.
"We put this out on Facebook, the video out on Facebook and had over 30,000 views, we had 600 shares,” Martin says. “We actually had good tips where they gave us names and phone numbers and where they were at - 20 to 25 tips like that out of that group. That's an enormous amount of people looking at that video."
This robbery rocked Lagrange County due to the nature of the crime, as well as the presence the Muscular Distrophy Association (MDA) has in the area. MDA’s Executive Director Ashley Zumstein is still in shock.
"We understand there are a lot of people in need, and I'm not saying that, that they don't deserve to be helped... but there's got to be other ways than stealing from charity."
The exact dollar figure taken has not been confirmed, but sources with the Sheriff’s Office and the Marathon station believe it to be between $70 and $100. One anonymous area resident who heard about the robbery even donated $80 to the Marathon station Thursday morning to help cover a part of the amount taken.
