UNITED STATES (www.nbc33.com) -- Many Americans do not know that there are foods in U.S. grocery stores that contain ingredients that are banned in other countries.
When you're navigating grocery store aisles, consumers might never imagine there are foods with the same ingredients used to make floors shine. Such as the macaroni and cheese that kids eat all the time that contains cold tar.
Red 40, blue 1, blue 2, yellow 5, yellow 6 are all banned in other countries. They found that when they got rid of those colors, attention deficit went away, grades went up and now they don't put them in foods anymore.
What about bread? Bread contains azodicarbonamide which is also an ingredient in sneaker soles.
Mira Calton, a certified nutritionist, co-authored a book with her husband that is now in 6,000 grocery chains nationwide. Inside is an isle by isle guide to help consumers make safe choices and the duo is fighting to show how buyers afford healthier foods.
