Haunting Results in New Ghost Poll

By Peter Ambrose

(AP) - A former Indiana woman says it was bad enough when the TV and lights mysteriously flicked on at night. Then, when her daughter began talking to an unseen girl and neighbors said children had been murdered in the house, it was time to move.

Misty Conrad lived in Syracuse, Indiana, when her family was scared from the house they rented.

Now, the 40-year-old homemaker lives in Hampton, Virginia, and is one of the 34% of people who say they believe in ghosts.

According to a pre-Halloween poll by The Associated Press and
Ipsos, that's the same proportion who believe in unidentified flying objects.

A smaller but still substantial 23% say they have actually seen a ghost or believe they have been in one's presence.

The most likely candidates for such visits include single people, Catholics and those who never attend religious services. Also, more
liberals than conservatives report seeing a ghost.

The poll was conducted October 16th to 18th. It involved telephone interviews with more than 1,000 adults and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
