Mayoral Candidate Renews Plea for Testing Results on OmniSource Property

By Jeff Neumeyer

Republican Fort Wayne Mayoral Candidate Matt Kelty is pushing hard for full disclosure of testing results from the old OmniSource property.

Indiana's NewsCenter asked the City of Fort Wayne for those results, but the city attorney said that information is confidential for now.

Kelty is also pushing for a full explanation from the city on the status of the proposed purchase of the abandoned OmniSource land by the city with hopes that it could soon play host to new housing, retail and other community attractions called the North River Project.

The city has balked at turning over soil testing results, claiming OmniSource allowed the testing, provided the information was not made public.

The city says it needed the test results to make an informed purchase decision.

Kelty says he's afraid Mayor Graham Richard's administration will consummate a purchase without proper oversight.

Matt Kelty/(R) Fort Wayne Mayoral Candidate: " Is he going to ask city council to review this option to purchase or is the Redevelopment Commission simply going to move forward of their own accord?"

Tom Smith/(R) 1st District City Council: " Citizens are already talking about this and they know we have to be sure that that land is clean or as clean as can be."

A city official we contacted, who did not want to be identified, says negotiations with OmniSource are ongoing, and no decision has yet been made about whether the city wants the land and any cleanup responsibility that might come with it.

That same city official says it's not perfectly clear right now if City Council would be approached to sign off on a purchase agreement, or if a sale could be completed outside council review.
