High gas prices prompt Michigan campers perks

Michigan parks system comes up with plan to lure campers who might otherwise stay away because of high gas prices.

DETROIT, MI (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- Officials in Michigan are doing everything they can to lure Hoosiers back to their parks this summer. But they also know about the high cost of gas, and how that might keep some campers away.

The perk was prompted by gas prices approaching $4 a gallon -- and the fear people will opt to park their gas-guzzling vehicles at home this summer.

The Michican Department of Natural Resources announced the plan Thursday. The department estimates storing trailers and vehicles in between overnight stays could save campers about 30 percent on fuel.

The storage perk will be available at more than 30 parks and recreation areas statewide. Those interested need to show proof of a recent camping stay. Storage is first-come, first-served.

Indiana officials haven't yet said if they'll consider a similar plan to ease the financial burden of campers brought on by rising gas prices.
