FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- If you're planning to eat out anytime soon, you might want to think twice about your order.

"I ordered a Whopper Jr. with cheese and there was no tomato on it and I love tomatoes," says Tabitha Riggs, a Burger King customer.

"I was surprised! I had a Tender Crispy Chicken Sandwich, which I was surprised on the menu up there, it showed a tomato in there but I didn't see no tomatoes on there," says Craig Perry, a Burger King customer.

A sign at Burger King explains the change. Federal health officials recently warned that Salmonella food poisoning linked to tomatoes has spread to 16 states including Indiana. We found similar warnings posted at Quizno's, McDonald's, Arby's, just to name a few. The Fort Wayne-Allen County Health Department alerted local food chains and grocery stores.

"They've been very cooperative, they're wanting to protect public the same as us, on the same side, on same goal," says Dawn McDevitt, FW-AC Health Department's Director of Food and Consumer Protection.

At Biaggi's, an Italian restaurant in Fort Wayne, the alert is a challenge. 80 percent of their menu includes tomatoes. They're now substituting cherry tomatoes for Roma tomatoes because they're not part of the FDA alert.

"It's going to be good for now, but definitely want to get back on track with the Roma tomatoes, different flavors and tomatoes just handle themselves differently, so we'll be excited to get them back in stock," says Garrett Hibiske.

Along with the cherry variety, the FDA says grape and homegrown tomatoes, and those sold on the vine. Tomatoes grown in at least 19 states including Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, New York, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia have also been deemed as safe.
