Trading in that Gas Guzzler

By Eric Clabaugh

Nearly three years ago, the Hahns decided it was time for a bigger vehicle when there family began to grow.

Nicole: We had a new baby and we wanted a bigger vehicle so we went and bought the GMC Envoy and at that time we didn't even think about gas prices.

Nicole drives nearly one hundred miles to and from work on a daily basis.
So as gas prices sky-rocketed...their budget began to hurt.

Nicole: It was bad because in just one week I would spend about 150 dollars on gas.

The cost of fuel was becoming more than they could afford... so after a month of debating, the Hahn's decided a more fuel efficient vehicle was the answer. It's a debate that's difficult for many family's.

Mark McKibben-Glenbrook Hyundai: "None of them are that easy, there's always a lot to go over but when we break everything down and show how much they are actually saving a month on gas, even if their payment goes up, they're still saving a hundred to two hundred a month just on gas mileage."

So the Hahn's traded in their gas guzzler which averaged about 15 miles per gallon for a Hyundai Sante Fe that averages about 30.

Nicole Hahn: "It got significantly better gas mileage than the GMC did. I'm already seeing the difference in gas mileage but I still have the luxury of an SUV, there's room for the kids and it's a nice vehicle to drive."

But buyers beware...there's some give and take when trading in your gas guzzler.

Nicole Hahn: "I did take quite a hit when we traded in the old SUV for the same reason people aren't buying them. But in the long run I will make up that in just gas money in just one week."
