Controversy Surrounds Ohio's Issue 6 Casino

By Laura Donaldson

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s Newscenter) – Ohioans debate a constitutional amendment that would allow a resort casino into the state.

The amendment is on the November ballot. If passed, the $600 million casino would be located in Clinton County, between Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton.

“This is a constitutional amendment that is being written for the benefit of one out of state casino gaming company,” said Vote No on Issue 6 Spokesman Bob Tenenbaum. “And that simply isn't the right way to go about dealing with the issue of expanded gaming in Ohio.”

But, Co-Founder of My Ohio Now, Rick Lertzman says the casino would bring new opportunities to Ohioans.

“It's important to know that without us, Ohio is not going to have these jobs, they're not going to have hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue that goes to all 88 counties,” said Lertzman. “But what they will have if they defeat us is they will continue to have Argosy Casino in Indiana making $500 million and most of that is from Ohio.”

The supporters of the casino, My Ohio Now, own a racetrack in Ohio. While, the group opposed to the casino, Penn National own Race Way park in Toledo and the Argosy Casino in Indiana.

Several topics are covered in the advertisements, including taxes and jobs. Both organizations have strong words for each other as November nears.

“What frightens us most is the way this amendment is written,” said Tenenbaum. “A great deal of the so called benefits, could simply go away, particularly in the taxes that have been promised to all of Ohio's counties.”

Lertzman says his claims are untrue.

“Whatever our gross revenue is, which we look at to be $800 million, we're going to pay $240 million of that to every county,” said Lertzman. “Plus, like any other business we have to pay every tax that a business pays and beyond that we pay the 30 % tax.”

Because each organization has a large stake in the casino and because this is a constitutional amendment many Ohioans are divided on this issue.

Voters are encouraged to read the amendment before voting this November. You can view it at http://www.sos.state.oh.us/SOS/elections/IssueProcBallotBd/BallotBoard.aspx (be sure to scroll down on the page to view Issue 6).
