LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) (Indiana's NewsCenter)- A northern Indiana man who was run over by
a train and lost a leg while fleeing from a home he had just
burglarized has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
A LaPorte County judge sentenced 35-year-old William Hamblin of
Union Mills on Friday. Hamblin pleaded guilty to a felony burglary
charge for the June 2006 break-in at a LaPorte home.
Authorities say a man who saw Hamblin's vehicle parked outside
the home chased him away and Hamblin drove his car to a railroad
crossing.
Police said Hamblin left his vehicle and tried to climb between
two railroad cars to cross the tracks when the train began moving
and severed his leg.
Officers found a safe and at least one gun taken during the
burglary in his car.
