Driver Facing Charges After Striking Man Dead With Truck

By Natalie Hess

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - A Mentone man is being held without bond today after crushing a man he knew to death with his pickup truck and then fleeing the scene.

Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department says 41-year-old Marc Alan Greene is booked on preliminary charges of reckless homicide and OWI causing death after an incident last night that left a 40-year-old Syracuse man dead. Police and medics were called to EMS 18 Lane just north of Defreese Road near Dewar Lake about 3:45 p.m. on reports of a man being struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival deputies found the victim, 40-year-old William Wetzel, standing up near his vehicle.

Wetzell was flown by Parkview Samaritan helicopter to Kosciusko Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Witnesses told police that two vehicles stopped, facing each other, in the roadway. Both men got out and stood between their vehicles arguing. Greene returned to his truck and proceeded to strike Wetzel, who was standing between the front of both vehicles, say police.

Deputies located Greene at his home, where he fled to after the incident. They took him into custody without incident.

According to information provided to a Kosciusko County detective, the men had been best friends whose relationship had recently deteriorated.

An autopsy is scheduled at Saint Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne today to determine the exact cause of death.

The incident remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County Coroner's Office, Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and Kosciusko County F.A.C.T./Fatal Alcohol Crash Team.
