Group Making Push For Indiana Switch To Central Time

By Peter Neumann

CARMEL, Ind. (AP) - A group that wants to move all of Indiana
into the Central Time Zone is asking state legislators to reopen
the time debate.

Members of the Hoosiers for Central Time Coalition say they are
contacting legislators and school superintendents, arguing that
going to Central time would improve safety for children by having
more daylight when they are going to school.

Coalition spokeswoman Sue Dillon of Carmel says she became
involved in the effort after a 15-year-old Carmel student was
fatally hit by a bus during a dark morning.

Dillon says she knows legislators are reluctant to reopen the
time debate.

That debate peaked in 2005 when the Legislature adopted
statewide daylight saving time. The state now has 80 counties in
the Eastern time zone and 12 on Central time.
