Former Indiana Man Injured in Fort Hood Shooting

By Nina Settappa

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Relatives of a former Indiana man stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, say he's among about 30 people who were injured in Thursday's deadly shooting rampage at the Army base.

Nathan A. Hewitt's uncles say one bullet grazed Hewitt's hip and a second went through the 26-year-old soldier's calf in the shooting that killed 13 people.

Lafayette residents Elmo Robledo and Rex Deaton told the Journal & Courier that their nephew's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. Hewitt, who was born and raised in Lafayette, is being treated at a Fort Hood area hospital.

Deaton says Hewitt was in a base medical center getting vaccinations when the shooting began. He says his nephew yelled at other soldiers to follow him and they fled through a door.

The Army says the suspected gunman is an Army psychiatrist.
