High-Speed Chase Ends At Indianapolis Airport

By Rachel Agler

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Police say a traffic stop for a seat belt violation led to a high-speed chase that ended at Indianapolis International Airport, where the suspect apparently jumped from an elevated ramp and fell nearly 40 feet.

Richard Stedman was taken to an Indianapolis hospital and his condition was not immediately clear after the incident Thursday.

Police say officers attempted to stop the 44-year-old Stedman in Plainfield, but he fled on Interstate 70 and was pursued to the airport, where he drove onto the departures ramp and hit a retaining wall. They say Stedman left the car and jumped over the wall's railing onto a grassy area.

Police believe Stedman fled because he was wanted in a burglary case. He now faces additional charges of resisting arrest.

Airport officials say the incident didn't affect operations.
