HUNTINGTON, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - A Huntington teen is in critical condition after her car was t-boned at what some residents are calling a dangerous intersection.
Police say 16-year-old Jill Krueger is fighting for her life at a local hospital and employees at businesses near the crash site are speaking out about this congested intersection.
Police responded to North Jefferson and Stadium Drive at 3:15 Monday afternoon.
They say Huntington North High School student Jill Krueger was stopped at this sign to cross North Jefferson. She began to cross and didn't see 18-year old Alyssa Butts' blue pick up truck. The two collided and Krueger was air lifted in critical condition.
“I think it's a very dangerous intersection,” Lyle Juillerat said. Juillerat saw the accident from his work window. He says he rushed out to see if he could help Krueger on Monday. Juillerat says he’s seen several accidents on this congested road because the high school is at the intersection and U.S. 24 is less than a mile away. Juillerat says he’s concerned for not only the drivers at the intersection but for pedestrians too.
“There's a lot of kids that walk to and from the high school and a lot of college kids come over here back and forth too,” Juillerat said. “So even for the pedestrians I think it's very dangerous.”
Janice Brunnmeier works near the crash site. She says she avoids the intersection whenever she can.
“Traffic is lined up usually from stop light to stop light, so it's real bad,” Brunnmeier said. “And people coming out of the shopping center and there's no stop lights at any of the intersections coming out of the shopping center. It's just really dangerous. And you've got young drivers; it's just really bad.”
Area business employees say they want a stop light installed. Local police say that’s a state decision.
“Well, it's a concern always,” Huntington Police Chief Tom Emely said. “But it's nothing that we've pursued to the point of seeing about getting another traffic light or something else in there. That would have to be a study done by the state of Indiana because that's considered a US highway or state road there and it would be ultimately up to them to install that light.”
Emely says he will contact the Indiana Department of Transportation this week and see about getting a light installed at North Jefferson and Stadium Drive.
