Election Recount Deadline Approaches

November 15, 2010 Updated Nov 15, 2010 at 7:35 PM EDT

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - For some the excitement of election day has already begun to fade, but for county election officials today marks the deadline for submitting the official results. That means the deadline for applying for recounts is drawing near.

That could prove significant in at least one close race. After a post-election audit, it appears incumbent Allen County Council member, Democrat Maye Johnson, has lost out to Republican challenger Kevin Howell by 36 votes. That's up from an estimated 29 votes on election night.

Johnson still has until noon Tuesday to request an official recount, or the Democratic Party can request one on her behalf before noon Friday.

Officials say they gathered other useful information during this election season as well, such as voter turn out. A fairly typical 35-40% of registered voters headed to the polls on November 2nd, and outside of a few machine shortages and long lines, officials say the day went smoothly.

However, they say next year they may calculate voter turnout differently when determining resource allocation.

Beth Dlug, Allen Co. Director of Elections, says, "Generally we've made calculations based on straight across the board for a turnout, and we may be taking a look at maybe focusing on different areas of the county that might have a bigger turnout than others and maybe adjusting our numbers for machines on that."

Dlug says the final results differ slightly from election night due to additional military, overseas, and provisional ballots.
