Glam movie icons Monica Bellucci and Sophie Marceau mutate one into the other in a weird fantasy thriller screening at the Cannes film festival Saturday.
"Don't Look Back", dubbed a "psychological thriller" by its 38-year-old French director Marina de Van, won a mixed response from critics at a preview, some hissing the movie, some applauding, and many looking perplexed.
In the film Marceau plays a writer penning a novel inspired by her youth but slowly morphs into Bellucci as she seeks to recall long-lost memories.
Furniture in her flat moves, the decor changes, and she fails to recognise even her own children as the camera portrays a face that is part-Marceau, part-Bellucci.
"My reference was Francis Bacon," the director said in an interview. "I wanted to make a pyschological drama using the fantasy genre."
She added: "I had the idea a long time ago. It wasn't written for Marceau-Bellucci but I thought the idea of using two icons was interesting."
