The sister of former US president John F. Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, has died, local media said on Tuesday citing a family source. She was 88
It was not immediately clear what ailment affected Shriver, who was also the sister of Senator Edward Kennedy and whose daughter married California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
She had been rushed to a Massachusetts hospital in critical condition earlier this month, hospital officials said on Friday.
She was known to have suffered a series of recent strokes.
Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968 and was known as one of the country's main champions of the mentally disabled.
Her work was inspired by the experience of having a mentally disabled sister, Rosemary.
