Feared former Republican lawmaker Tom DeLay will be showing off his moves in another kind of arena next month, appearing as a contestant in ABC television's "Dancing with the Stars."

DeLay, a former House of Representatives majority leader, will compete against 15 other celebrities in the popular show, which pairs the famous or near-famous with professional dancers.

ABC said the show "went outside its usual choices from entertainment and sports in selecting the 62-year-old DeLay," who served in the House of Representatives from 1984 to 2005.

The Texas congressman was nicknamed "the Hammer" for his hard-nosed enforcement of party discipline until an indictment on charges of violating campaign finance rules forced him out as majority leader in 2005.

Among those competing against DeLay are Kelly Osbourne, the daughter of rocker Ozzy Osbourne; Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin; martial arts champion Chuck Liddell; and snow boarder Louie Vito.

DeLay also will be keeping company on the show with a slew of actresses, models and singers.

The ninth season of Dancing with the Stars is scheduled to begin September 21 and ABC News reported that the former lawmaker had set up a website called "Dancing with Delay" where fans can track his progress on the show.
