COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - It turns out that a turnstile at the
Columbus, Ohio, airport wasn't built for a flamingo.
That became clear Sunday to animal expert Jack Hanna -- the
guy who's always bringing unusual animals onto TV talk shows. He's
the director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo. And he became trapped --
along with his traveling companion, an 11-month-old flamingo --
while trying to leave the Columbus airport.
They arrived just after midnight to find the terminal closed. The only way to leave the tarmac was through a 10-foot-tall metal turnstile with several horizontal bars. When Hanna tried to get the flamingo's crate through, it got stuck.
Hanna was able to squeeze free, and walked to a nearby fire
station, where the records now show that the firefighters were
called out for a "flamingo rescue."
It took three of them to lift the crate up and out of the
turnstile.
Hanna jokes that the next time he flies through that airport, he
won't bring anything bigger than a gerbil.
Hanna had just visited the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo last week.
