Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The motorcyclist who was injured trying to avoid a deer on U.S. 24 Monday afternoon has died as a result of his injuries sustained from the accident.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified the rider as Robert C. Mayo, 51, of Huntington.

Around 2:50 p.m. Mayo was riding his motorcycle westbound on U.S. 24 when he tried to avoid hitting a deer that was crossing the road. Witnesses' told police that the deer ran across East bound traffic into West bound traffic and into the path of Mayo. He then tried to avoid hitting the deer but was unsuccessful. Mayo was then thrown from his motorcycle as a result of the collision.

The vehicle that was directly behind Mayo tried to avoid the accident by moving into the opposite lane, and accidentally ran Mayo over.

Mayo was wearing his helmet at the time. The driver of the other vehicle was an adult female. Fort Wayne Police say that it does not appear that speed or alcohol were factors in the accident.

Mayo was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle reported no injuries.

West bound lanes were closed for a couple of hours so investigators could process the scene.

Mayo was the care taker of the St. Felix Friary in Huntington and volunteered at numerous events..

Those who knew him say he will be sorely missed.
