FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Toys for Tots volunteers spent the morning filling their shopping carts with items for area kids.

Several marines and about 20 DANA employees hit the Meijer on Illinois road to make the holidays a little brighter for kids who might not otherwise have a gift this holiday.

They grabbed toys, games and dolls from the shelves. And everything that was bought today will be taken to a warehouse, where they will be wrapped.

Sunny Helstrom from Toys for Tots says, “The children like a lot of things. Unfortunately, today's children wish for the electronics but we cannot provide that. So we try to give a variety of different toys, sleds, bicycles.”

The items will be distributed next week.

Last year, Toys for Tots raised $15,000 and bought 2500 toys for children who might not otherwise have had a Christmas.
