FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Thousands of people are already packing into Sycamore Hills Golf Club, in anticipation of the first official PGA tour event in Fort Wayne.
Wednesday, pro players partnered with local amateurs for the Chick Evans Memorial Pro-Am, drawing lots of people to the course. The actual PGA event gets underway Thursday.
Parking for the event is going smoothly so far. 1,500 cars were parked in the lot. But Thursday more people are expected because that's when the Web.com Hotel Fitness Championship begins.
The entrance to the lot is just east of the course's main entrance on Covington Road. The lot is expected to be able to accommodate between 2,000 and 2,500 cars and parking is free to everyone who attends the tournament.
Now to ease traffic backups, police officers are stationed at the entrance to the parking lot "P" on Covington Road.
They're directing traffic to make sure drivers aren't waiting too long to get out of the lot. The operations manager for the tournament says it's unusual but he's excited there's an area that's so close to the course to use for parking.
“It's a great public parking lot actually,” Joerdan Simpson, Operations Manager for the Hotel Fitness Championship. “Most golf tournaments you go to, you'll see, most public parking lots are very far away from the main entrance to the golf tournament. Here we have a great piece of property. The parking lot is literally at the main entrance. It's a very short walk right inside the gates, and once you're inside the gates you're at the main hub of the golf course."
If the lot near the course does fill up, there is an overflow plan to have people park at the Chapel and be shuttled to the course. At this point officials for the tournament say they don't expect to have to use this back up plan. Obviously if they do have to, it only means the event attracted more people.
Lot P off of Covington is the designated parking lot for all VIP, spectator, volunteer and caddie parking.
