FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is now offering online renewal for driver's licenses.

However, to keep yourself safe from fraud, BMV executives want you to destroy your invalid license when you new license arrives in your mail box.

Officials said online renewal was the most requested service last year.

"It's the idea that BMV services are no longer confined a license branch. That they are out there in many other ways to make it easier and more convenient for our customers," BMV Spokesman Dennis Rosebrough.

Online renewal is a fairly simple process.

Just log on to www.in.gov/bmv, create an account and fill out the driver's license renewal form.

The BMV will use your current picture that is on file, and send out your new license.

However, you will only be able to renew your license online once every other time.

Licenses are valid in Indiana for six year cycles.

Federal law requires drivers to have an updated picture every 12 years.

The BMV said they are not worried about invalid license fraud.

They want online renewal customers to treat their old license like a credit card.

When you receive your new license, just cut up and destroy your invalid license.

However, there is nothing to officially stop crooks but their conscience.

The BMV's Deputy Commissioner told Indiana's NewsCenter that it is on community members to follow the rules.

Commissioner Dennis Rosebrough said it is also the responsibility of businesses to take a good look at driver's licenses they are held by the proper person and that they are valid.
