Jennifer Gilbert Bilbee has lived in her Wolcottville farm house for more than 16 years. On July 6th, she sent a $6,000 cashiers check to HSBC to catch up her mortgage and pay ahead, but when her next statement arrived, there was no record of the check.
"I'm starting to panic, no one knows where the money went", said Bilbee.
Jennifer says she's spoken to a representative for the company 15 times, and most conversations went well. Her last statement showed a balance of nearly 10-thousand dollars, with over $800 in late fees and interest. She even sent the bank a copy, showing they had cashed her check.
As one of the largest financial institutions in the world, finding a starting point to contact the bank on Jennifer's behalf wasn't easy, but with cooperation from the company, the results came very quickly.
Within 2 days word came that the bank had located the check and the issue has been resolved in Jennifer's favor.
With 5 kids, Jennifer was worried about losing her home and worries about other homeowners who find themselves trying to stand up against other large companies in the mortgage industry.
"I'm worried about others in this economy, you really don't know where to turn and you don't have many options", said Gilbert Bilbee.
One option is always a lawyer, but like many cases, it's just not cost effective for the money in dispute.
Jennifer was persistent and it paid off. We have every reason to believe HSBC was moving toward a resolution in her case, it's just hard to explain why it took so long to get corrected.
