Toy Recalls change Christmas Wish-Lists

By Nicole Pence

More than sixty toy-recalls this year making it even harder for parent's to fulfill their child's Christmas wish list. With less than two months left until Santa comes, store workers are noticing a trend in gift-buying due to those recalls. Nicole Pence reports.

A quick check of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's toy recall website shows several dozen recalls, totaling tens of millions of toys issued since August. The recalls are not only nerve wrecking for parents, they're also making it harder for some moms and dads to shop this holiday season.

Indiana’s NewsCenter visited the Meijer store off Lima road Friday afternoon. They've had their Christmas decorations and kids toys stocked-up for about two months.

Store director Pat Mead, admits they've done things differently because of the fears surrounding the toy market. Mead says more gift cards are out on display. He also says the "days of old" are back. Parents are turning down toys with many pieces and parts and choosing traditional gifts, like board games, bikes, and books instead.

Pat Mead/Meijer Store Director: " There is a trend that's happening, kinda going back to the basics. We are getting those baby boomers that are in their 30s now are buying stuff for their children that are the traditional board games. So, and the simple electronics games that require only one battery instead of a whole bunch of outlets."

Amanda McNeilly/Parent: " We are much more careful in what we are buying this year. Pretty much not going to buy anything by Mattell this year. We are just watching what the recalls are and basically just shopping off of that."

US Lawmakers have proposed a bill that would virtually ban lead in toys and give the product safety agency more funding for testing, recalls and enforcement.

It will take a while for any law to be on the books, so best bet is for parents to be the watch-dogs, even if it means saying no to some of your child's Christmas requests.
