ORMAS, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is investigating a drowning at Old Lake in Whitley County.

Conservation officials say James M. Beck, 29, of Fort Wayne, was swimming by himself around 2 p.m. Saturday, when his girlfriend noticed from inside a home that Beck was struggling in the water.

The woman jumped in the water, and swam to Beck in an effort to help him. During the attempted rescue, the girlfriend let go of Beck to grab a nearby raft, and Beck went under for good.

DNR, Kosciusko County and township dive teams searched the water for hours, eventually finding Beck's body at 8:45 p.m.
