A casino in northeast Indiana? State Senator Robert Meeks wants to see it happen. But, what do residents in Steuben County think about the idea? Nicole Pence has the story.
The idea of a casino in Steuben County is in its very early stages, but residents are already picking which side of the aisle they'll be on.
State Senator Bob Meeks of LaGrange filed a bill that would allow Gary casino owner Don Barden to move one of his licenses to Steuben County. Meeks argues the move could create 800 jobs. The County had the second-highest unemployment rate in the state in October.
But getting legislative approval could be difficult. State lawmakers have to approve the license first and then residents of Steuben County would vote in a referendum to decide if they wanted a gambling spot in their area. The referendum could happen as early as fall of 2008 or as late as 2009...or the idea could die altogether. Indiana’s NewsCenter talked to a few people about what they thought about the proposed casino.
Linda Perkins/Against Casino: " No. I think it is a terrible idea. (why?) I think it ruins families. I think that people should be spending their money in other ways."
Karen Hamilton/For Casino: "I think it would probably bring in even more attractions, even more tourists. It would really enhance and bring to the forefront this part of the state."
Angola’s Mayor argues lawmakers shouldn't be the ones to call the shots, and a casino could be good for the area.
Dick Hickman/(D) Angola Mayor: " This might be good for Steuben county and an economic development here. And, we are all in a tough situation. Cities and towns and counties and local units of governments trying to have revenue to create services...instead of forming an opinion one way or another right now, get the facts as best you can."
The proposed casino could be built just west of Angola, bordering city limits, or along the Indiana toll road.
Though Meeks will carry the bill during this short session, legislators will likely be focused on property tax reform and lawmakers from other riverboat and racetrack communities will likely oppose moving a casino to northeast Indiana.
