FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) will host area middle school Mathletes as they compete in the Anthony Wayne chapter contest of the national MATHCOUNTS program, Saturday.
The competition begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Walb Student Union Ballroom and is expected to conclude by noon. The event is organized by IPFW's Department of Mathematical Sciences and the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science.
A total of 6 schools and approximately 50 students will compete.
Schools represented are:
● Canterbury Middle School, Fort Wayne
● Edgewood Middle School, Warsaw
● Saint Jude Catholic School, Fort Wayne
● Summit Middle School, Fort Wayne
● Woodside Middle School, Fort Wayne
● St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School, Fort Wayne
Teachers and students have been preparing for the competition since the fall. Students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches. Subjects include algebra, probability, statistics, and geometry. Winners will receive trophies and will advance to the Indiana state MATHCOUNTS finals, to be held at Purdue University, West Lafayette, on March 9, 2013. State winners will have the opportunity to earn an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the 2013 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition.
