Oprah's "Big Give" Local Project Pays it Forward

By Corinne Rose

(Fort Wayne, IN) -- LAST WEEK, WE FIRST TOLD YOU ABOUT INDIANA'S NEWSCENTER'S ROLE IN A COMMUNITY PROJECT USING SEED MONEY FROM OPRAH WINFREY.

Here are more details about the initiative.

"Oprah's Big Give" gave Indiana's NewsCenter $10,000 to support a project that pays it forward, by impacting as many people as possible.

Now, the name may be misleading, but the station chose Aboite New Trails to receive the money, and in turn, make it grow to affect positive change in the community.

Building seven miles of walking and bike trails in the western-most area of the county, will link 40 miles of trails from Johnny Appleseed to Tillman Park, and from New Haven to the west county line.

It's a way to encourage a community labled one of the fattest in the country to live a healthier lifestyle, and in turn, spur economic growth.

Lori Keys\Aboite New Trails: " Anyone can put on a pair of tennis shoes and walk out their door and enjoy health benefits, enjoy cleaner air, reduce traffic. The trails improve our economy, they encourage businesses to relocate here because everyone is looking for a healthier and more active way of life."

A community-wide fundraiser will be held April 12th to help raise even more money for the project.
