FW City Council: Open Government Bill Proposed

FW City Council: Open Government Bill Proposed

By Web News

Several issues discussed at Fort Wayne City Council's meeting Tuesday night, before members take next week off for spring break. City Council reporter Nicole Pence reports.

A final vote, on the transition process involved with Aqua Indiana and City utilities. By May or June, all Aqua Indiana lines in the northern area will carry city water, for the nine-thousand customers there. About half of the six-phases of the transition process are complete, including Fallen Timbers and areas near the Parkview YMCA.

Tuesday evening Council signed-off to pay Aqua Indiana up to 400-thousand dollars to help with the transition. Customers in the "Windmill Ridge area" will switch over next, followed by those in the DuPont/Lima area, and then the East DuPont area.

Also at the meeting, in an effort to make government "more open", Republican council member Mitch Harper introduced a bill that would make it mandatory for public meeting notices to be posted on the city's website. State law already calls for announcing them. But, Harper argues there needs to be a "one stop shop" website where citizens can see when and where all public hearings will take place.

Councilman Mitch Harper/4th District: "One place, one stop shop, where the citizens can go to find out what's going on in terms of public meetings. All onto one page that's within the City's website, or it may be on their own agency page. (Will there be any extra fee to the City?) It's available on the Internet for people to grab a hold of, much more accessible at a lower cost."

Harper says the bill may be tweaked before members vote at the next meeting.

Finally, Council gave a preliminary o-k to fund the Maplecrest Road extension project. The City engineer says the plan is to begin construction on State Road 9-30 to Lake Avenue, by 2010. The highly congested area will go from two lanes to four with an estimated cost of 125-thousand dollars.
